Apps for Kayaking

David Steel, June 2026

Free ones I use out of a wide choice

XC weather – accurate I find for wind speed and direction especially on west coast

Tides near me – useful- although only 1 week ahead

Surfline – good for beaches to assess surf conditions for launching and landing

Tides4fishing – only site I have found that has tidal coefficients on

Met Office Inshore waters forecast – always worth checking

BBC weather – good for possibility of thunderstorms

Timelines – amazing resource for tidal flow

Marine traffic – to spot where big boats are heading on long crossings

Windy – great for swell height and directon as well as wind – and sea temperature !

I Boating free – free charts (although designed for fishing !)

Sat24.com – useful for detecting location of thunderstorms

A reminder of the before force wind speed – remember which units you are using.
As an indication, the “remit” upper limit for club led events for beginner and intermediate paddlers is Force 4.
